7-8-09 | During the winter and early spring months of 2009, project site recommendations evolved from feasibility studies of potential site options for the chiller plant. The recommendation to utilize the surface parking lot at the NE corner of Cannon Drive and Twelfth Avenue was approved this spring by the BoT and requires special considerations for future chiller equipment, noise reduction, sustainable materials and construction practices, energy saving features and aesthetic massing to anchor the NW corner of the Medical Center research and healthcare district. Late spring and early summer activities included interviews for various professional services by the Architect of Record, a Design Architect, a Process Systems MEP Engineer for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering, a Commissioning Authority, and a Construction Manager. All of these professionals are in various stages of technical proposal and fee contract negotiations. We anticipate this process to be completed mid to late August 2009. Upcoming Activities | Once our selected professionals are under contract, we will commence an aggressive programming and design process. There will be two distinct focus group activities during the planning and design stages of this project. One will be led by the Design Architect, Ross-Barney Architects (Chicago) and will focus on the character and aesthetics of the facility within the overall master planning framework of the district plan. The other will be led by RMF Engineers (Baltimore) and will focus on the functionality and engineering of an automated unoccupied chiller facility that report operations across campus to McCracken Power Plant. Both firms will be coordinated and managed by the Architect of Record, Champlin/Haupt (Cincinnati). We anticipate these chartering, programming, planning, and preliminary design activities to commence during late August 2009. |

| 9-14 The city of Columbus has advised that dam removal is nearly complete. There is some remaining work to remove parts of the foundation. The water level actually rose slightly this week because of a release by the Army Corps of Engineers at the Delaware Dam. The water is expected to reach its final lowered point next week. Once this occurs, the remaining work this fall will be bringing in significant amounts of fill to even out elevations in the river bed and construct the new river channel. Most of this work will occur in the river area, south of King Avenue. Traffic impacts should be minimal, although you may notice an increase in truck traffic near King & Fifth Avenue and King & Olentangy Avenue near the construction access points. Please note, there are several other construction projects in that area that may impact sidewalks and intersections, but they are unrelated to the Olentangy River Restoration. |
