This on-line newsletter is the first of a new periodic update meant to keep friends and neighbors of the South Residential District up to date regarding the design of three new projects and the related construction activities that begin as early as Summer Quarter 2010. The three projects are the South High Rise Renovation and Additions, the Hall Complex Expansion, and the Kennedy Commons Renovation. All projects begin some phase of construction this summer. See below for specifics on each project.

Overall Site Plan

South High Rise renovation and expansion

This project involves the renovation and expansion of five student housing facilities in the south campus area – Siebert, Stradley, Park, Smith, and Steeb Halls. Two bold additions along with extensive renovations to the existing buildings will include 2,483 beds. The additions will connect Stradley/Park Halls and Smith/Steeb Halls, thereby creating two buildings from four. The project also includes functional, aesthetic, and programmatic improvements to the buildings.

In addition, a chilled water plant will be constructed that will supply chilled water to the existing five buildings and two new connector buildings to allow the addition of air conditioning to all.

Hall Complex expansion

This project will construct a new housing facility as an extension of the William H. Hall housing complex.  The new housing will be suite-style and will provide approximately 537 additional student beds.

The facility will be located across from the existing Hall Complex on 10th Ave., at the location of the current parking lot at the corner.

Kennedy Commons renovation

This project is the first phase of the Food Service Masterplan to renovate traditional dining commons to better accommodate the demands of students, faculty, staff, and visitors to campus. The primary focus of the project is the interior organization of the campus dining operations within the complex, improving the aesthetics of the dining halls and reorganizing the main kitchen that will support all three dining halls.

This renovation completely reconfigures the entire servery and kitchen, including cold prep, hot prep, central stores, coolers, freezers, central receiving, administrative offices, staff lockers, restrooms, and dish washing.
