The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center is pleased to announce that we have been named a 2022 Climate Champion by Health Care Without Harm.
“As a participant in the Health Care Climate Challenge, we are committed to reducing our own carbon footprint, preparing for the impacts of extreme weather and the resulting burden of disease, and educating our community while promoting policies to protect public health from climate change,” said Aparna Dial, senior director of sustainability and facilities management at The Ohio State University and Wexner Medical Center.
This year we were among 19 health systems/hospitals in the United States, out of a total of 50 health care institutions around the world, to earn awards for our achievements including a carbon neutral goal by 2050, sourcing 16% carbon neutral electricity on main campus and 100% at offsite locations (totaling 29% carbon neutral electricity overall!), anesthesia gas emissions reduction work, and efforts to integrate climate and health topics into medical school curriculum. We received recognition for the efforts and success of our institution and staff with the following awards:
- Renewable Energy – Silver
- Climate Resilience - Silver
- Climate Leadership – Silver
We are honored to receive these awards and to be a part of a global community of health care institutions on every continent leading the transformation to climate-smart health care. We celebrate this moment with everyone at our institution and the more than 300 health systems/institutions, representing more than 28,000 hospitals and health centers, participating globally. And we look forward to the work that lies ahead as we strive to protect the future health of our community, environment and planet.
