Ohio State is pleased to announce the opening of a new compost drop-off location in the parking lot of the Northwood–High Building at 2231 N. High Street. This site is the newest addition to Ohio State’s compost drop-off program, bringing the total number of locations across campus to nine.

Composting plays an important role in reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. Organic materials, such as food scraps and compostable paper products, make up about one-third of what we throw away. When these materials are landfilled, they take up valuable space and generate methane, a potent greenhouse gas that traps significantly more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. Composting these materials instead helps reduce emissions and keeps valuable resources in circulation.

Faculty, staff, and students living off campus are encouraged to participate in Ohio State’s compost drop-off program. Getting started is easy: free countertop compost bins are available upon request for pick-up at the Ohio Union or the Service Building Annex.

What Can I Compost?

Ohio State’s composting program accepts a wide range of materials, including:

  • Food scraps, such as fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, bones, shellfish, eggshells, and coffee grounds and filters
  • Plant-based and food-soiled paper products, including pizza boxes, napkins, paper towels, wood stirrers, and chopsticks
  • Certified compostable serving ware, often labeled as compostable, BPI-certified, #7, or “PLA”

By using the compost drop-off locations available across campus, you can make a simple change that has a meaningful impact on slowing the growth of landfills and protecting the environment in Central Ohio.
