The Ohio State University is excited to announce that it is a 2022 National Recycling Coalition Award (NRC) recipient! The annual awards program is designed to honor and recognize outstanding individuals, programs and organizations around the country, both for their sustainability-related achievements and to serve as a model and a resource for learning for NRC members.
Ohio State is awarded under the “Outstanding Higher Education” category for its commitment to sustainability. From ambitious goals to increase Ohio State’s diversion rate, the expansion of the new compost programs to collaborations with external partners such as Rumpke Waste and Recycling Services and Advanced Drainage Systems, the university serves as a successful model for other public programs.
Mary Leciejewski, Ohio State’s zero waste coordinator said it was a team effort, “I’m proud of the Buckeye community for being recognized in leading the way for zero waste. This national award would not be possible without the many dedicated campus stakeholders who integrate sustainability principles into their work. By making our campus operations more sustainable, we not only reduce our resource footprint, but we create an environment for our students to develop into responsible stewards of our natural world.”
NRC’s Awards Committee Chair, Lisa Skumatz, commented on the process expressing the views of fellow committee members, “We received over 105 nominations this year for the awards and picking just one winner in each category was difficult, but also rewarding to see the great efforts and programs around the country for recycling and organics diversion.”
