America Recycles Day

America Recycles Day (November 15) is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. It is an opportunity to promote environmental citizenship and take action to increase and improve recycling in America.

In the News: Composting Programs Expanding at Ohio State

The expansion of the university composting program was recently spotlighted by Ohio State News. “Ohio State is leading the region on this,” said FOD’s Mary Leciejewski. More than 1,000 Buckeyes have signed up to participate in a new program that has already diverted more than 114 tons of food waste from landfills since July and sparked new ideas from students in the classroom.

Zero Waste Stadium

Ohio Stadium is one of the largest stadiums in the country to continuously achieve zero waste status by diverting 90% or more of materials from the landfill.

In the News: Ohio State, SWACO to Test Improved Waste Management Strategies

In a new collaboration, announced in advance of America Recycles Day Nov. 15, Ohio State and SWACO will share expertise and resources to divert waste from Franklin County’s Sanitary Landfill. They will use Ohio State’s campus as a living laboratory to test waste diversion projects — from education and behavioral change to new recycling technologies — with the aim of scaling up successful strategies across Central Ohio.

Student Volunteers Lead Campus Cleanup

Being a Buckeye takes on many forms, including giving back to the campus and the community. Generosity was on display this weekend as warmer weather welcomed green-focused clean-ups across the Columbus campus.

Students came together to tidy the Jennings Hall rain garden and Aronoff bioswale. The volunteers weeded beds, picked up trash and mulched while Facilities Operations and Development (FOD) supplied the mulch and a truck to place yard waste.

Sustainable Safari

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is commonly overrun by groups of children or school trips. But in early November, the zoo hosted a different kind of field trip. More than 100 high school and college students attended a two-day Teen Eco Summit, featuring inspiring guest speakers, do-it-yourself workshops, and interesting animals. 

One of those guest speakers was Ohio State’s Mary Leciejewski.
